Some years ago the founder of Tax Redux, David Bullard, purchased an old, run-down but architecturally significant commercial building for $1. His intention was to restore it to usefulness. The property produced no income yet the assessment on the property was $93,000. Mr. Bullard sought an assessment reduction reflecting the building’s actual value, $1. He was told by the chairman of the review board, “If you are fool enough to buy that building you are fool enough to pay the taxes.” After eventually winning his case Mr. Bullard founded Tax Redux to help others overcome excessive property taxation.
It is noteworthy that The Marshall House where Tax Redux has its offices is a Revolutionary War landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A principal cause of the War of Independence was unjust taxation. It is an odd coincidence that the struggle for fair taxes is yet being waged from this venerable place.
